Gastric Bypass Financing-What you need to know

Gastric bypass financing is becoming increasingly common in the US, and if you’re considering having the surgery it might be an option that make the operation possible for you.  On average, gastric bypass procedures will set you back somewhere between twenty and twenty-five thousand dollars.  It’s the rare person who can afford to pay for that in cash, and in today’s economic climate that number is getting smaller all the time.  If you’re really rich, that’s not much money, but for most of us paying for it in one chunk is going to be impossible.  If the cost of bariatric surgery is holding you back, getting a loan to pay for it is something you should consider.

If most health insurance companies covered the procedure, gastric bypass financing wouldn’t be necessary, or at least not for most people.  But most of them don’t.  Which is surprising, because the future health care costs of a morbidly obese person are likely to run far higher than twenty-five thousand dollars.  People who are massively overweight are at far higher risks of cancer, diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, etc.  The cost to insurance companies for treating these conditions can be astronomical.    They’d be saving a lot of money in the long run by paying for as many of their insured to have this surgery who need it.  Refusing to pay for it is being penny wise and pound foolish.

But if you’re one of the millions of Americans who are in an insurance plan that doesn’t cover it, gastric bypass financing may be your only option.  It may sound like a lot of money, and you may think you can’t afford to take out a loan for the operation, but think again.  If this is how you’re looking at it, you’re making the same mistake these insurance companies are making.  Think how much you’ll be saving in future health care costs; compared to that the cost of surgery is a pittance.  Add in your greatly improved quality of life, and your extended life expectation, and it’s an easy choice.  If you need gastric bypass, financing is a great way to pay for it.
