If you’re considering bariatric surgery, you should know that there are several options.  Many people think that there’s only one kind of surgery to treat morbid obesity, but that’s not the case.  There are several different procedures, and one that’s growing in popularity is laparascopic weight loss surgery.

What is laparoscopic weight loss surgery?  Well, don’t be thrown off by the highly technical term.  Laparscopic simply means minimally invasive, as opposed to traditional surgery.  It’s performed using a small instrument called a laparascope.  This procedure is also known as pinhole surgery, and keyhole surgery, or bandaid surgery.  A laparascope incorporates a computer chip, a camera, and a lighting systme, which are all incredibly tiny and allow the surgeon to do precision work.

Of course, as is always the case with any medical procedure, there is some risk involved with laparascopic weight loss surgery.  But the dangers are greatly miminized when compared to traditional surgery.  Plus, there’s less pain after the operation, and the recovery time is a lot shorter.

Is this surgery for you?  Well, that’s a decision you’ll have to make after consulting with a bariatric specialist.  There are lots of factors to consider, including if you’re even a good candidate for weight loss surgery to begin with.  A truly professional bariatric surgeon will inform you that any surgery to lose weight, whether traditional or laparascopic, should be a last resort.  Only if you’ve tried to lose weigh repeatedly and been unable to should you consider it.  In addition, it’s only for people who are grossly overweight.  If you need to lose 50 or 60 pounds, that might seem like a lot, and it is, but generally you won’t qualify for the surgery.  Only people who are at least 100 pounds overweight, or weight at least twice as much as they should are considered appropriate candidates.  If you’re in this range, and you’ve tried and tried to lose weight but failed, you should schedule an appointment with a bariatric specialist to talk about your situation.
