Life After Gastric Bypass Surgery: What’s It Like?

Life after gastric bypass surgery will be radically different than your old life.  It’s important to know what changes to expect, and to decide for yourself if you’re ready to deal with them.  Hundreds of thousands of people have looked at the results of gastric bypass surgery, both good and bad, and have decided that it was worth doing.

The biggest change you’ll experience in your life after gastric bypass surgery is that you’ll never again be able to eat very much food.  Which is the whole point, of course, but most people don’t understand just how little they’ll be eating.  For a long time, it’s only one ounce at a time.  You’ll gradually build that up, but four ounces or so is the most you’ll ever be able to eat at once.  Also, you won’t be able to eat all of the same foods you did before.  Some of them will cause you intense pain or vomiting.  But you’ll also find that you’re now repulsed by the idea of eating what used to be some of your favorites.

You’ll also have to chew your food much longer than you’re used to, in order to digest it.  Additionally, you may have nearly constant diarrhea for quite some time.  Of course, you have to balance this with all the positives.  In two years, you will have lost all your excess weight if you’re like most.  You’ll have tons more energy, you’ll look better, and you’ll feel indescribably better.  You’ll have lots more sex appeal, as well as lots more interest in sex.  If you suffered from sleep apnea or adult onset (Type 2) diabetes, the surgery will probably cure it.  It’s hard to put a price tag on these results, and most people who’ve had the surgery feel that these benefits of life after gastric bypass surgery make the disadvantages worth it.
